LOUISE DÉRY: Louise Déry lives in Montréal. She holds a PhD in art history and has been the director of the Galerie de l'UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal) since 1997. Previously, she was curator of contemporary art at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Québec City and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and director of the Musée régional de Rimouski.

Teacher, writer, curator and director, Déry has realized many projects featuring major national and international artists including Daniel Buren, Giuseppe Penone, Manon De Pauw, Rober Racine, Sarkis, Nancy Spero, Antony Gormley, Dominique Blain, Geneviève Cadieux, Jana Sterbak, Françoise Sullivan, Stéphane La Rue, Raphaëlle de Groot, Artur Żmijewski, amongst others. She was the curator of the Canadian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007, presenting an exhibition of David Altmejd, whose work she has been promoting since 1998, notably through the publication of two monographs by Galerie de l’UQAM. She has curated and toured a Michael Snow retrospective in 2012, Solo Snow. Works by Michael Snow, which opened first in 2011 at Le Fresnoy, Studio national de l’art contemporain in Tourcoing (France), and then at AKBank Sanat, Istanbul. Her project with Shary Boyle, Flesh and Blood, has been exhibited at Galerie de l'UQAM, Montréal, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto and Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2010-2011). For the 2013 Venice Biennale, she was the curator for a performance by Montreal artist Raphaëlle de Groot and for a special project with Jean-Pierre Aubé in the 2015 Venice Biennale as well as for Radio Arte Mobile in Rome.

As a curator of group exhibitions, she has presented Le corps, la langue, les mots, la peau, Centre d'art contemporain Santa Mònica, Barcelona and Espaces intérieurs at Passage de Retz, Paris (1999-2000) and Metamorphosis, the first exhibition of Canadian artists in Istanbul (AK Bank Sanat, 2008). In the Fall 2013, she showed twenty artists from Montréal in an exhibition called À montréal quand l’image rôde, at Le Fresnoy, France (2013). The author of over fifty exhibition catalogues and several essays in specialised magazines and journals, very active in the international dissemination of art from Quebec and Canada in Europe, Asia and America, she is continuously developing a reflection on ethics and museology in relation to contemporary art.

Déry has received the first Hnatyshyn Foundation award for curatorial excellence (2007) and was the first recipient of the annual tribute from the Contemporary Art Galleries Association (AGAC) for her outstanding contribution to the visual arts community (2011). She has been awarded the Governor General Award in visual arts for her outstanding contribution to contemporary visual and/or media arts (2014). She is also a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
